Our chosen charity for March is a small organisation in Romania that is dedicated to the rescuing and re-homing of dogs in Romania. They aim to “provide an ethical solution for the tragic emergency of stray dogs in Romania.” Here’s more about them:
“Save the Dogs runs and develops a scheme to prevent strays, started by Sara Turetta began in 2001. In addition to promoting the medical-sanitary aspects of its sterilization work and first aid for animals in difficulty, Save the Dogs aims to foster an animal-friendly culture through dialogue with the local people and educational visits to the schools in the towns where the association works. A further important activity is the free veterinary assistance it provides for the numerous poor families in Costanza county.
As well as the veterinary clinic with its animal shelter (400 dogs and 30 cats that will soon be moved to a brand new facility), the organization manages a sanctuary for abandoned and abused equines. Actually 20 horses and 55 donkeys are looked after on a 4 hectares property, in collaboration with British charity The Donkey Sanctuary, while a riding therapy project has started in Bucharest, for disabled children.
Save the Dogs is currently working in the town of Medgidia, the second area which interrupted the massacres of strays and operating throughout the province with its mobile clinic. So far over 17.800 animals have been neutered free of charge, both strays and owned. Last but not least, at the same time as it continues its policy of sterilizations, the association operates a program of international adoptions, working with numerous Italian and foreign associations (Sweden, Finland), so as to give a family to those animals which for various reasons cannot be released again after being sterilized. In 2011, 561 animals left Romania by plane, destined for a better life.
The funds collected with the Oxford College campaign will be used to buy worming and fleeing products for our dogs.”
