Introduction

This diploma is designed for those with an interest in developing their knowledge and understanding of Human Resource issues. This could be either through a role as an individual working in Human Resources (HR), for those who wish to work in professions where HR is related to the sphere of work, or as a means to build on an existing knowledge base in its own right.

Learning Objectives

  • Students will have an opportunity to review contracts of employment.
  • Looking at termination of contracts.
  • Explore motivational techniques.
  • Gain knowledge of corporate responsibility.

This course consists of Ten Units and is a qualification awarded by CIE Global, a leading Awarding Body.

Assessment Objectives (AO)

AO: 1

Students must select and demonstrate clearly relevant knowledge and understanding through the use of evidence, examples and correct language and terminology appropriate to the course of study. This assessment, involves two written assignments: one halfway through the course and following the final unit. Both are assessed and graded by the assigned tutor, according to college procedures. The grading procedure if Pass or Fail. If you Fail an assessment you have the opportunity to amend where your tutor has highlighted and resubmit.

Students must critically evaluate and justify a point of view through the use of evidence and reasoned argument. Students can include evidence in different formats to support their written work such as documentation or images to support their course remembering Confidentiality and Data Protection.

Quality of Written Communication (QWC)

In addition, OLC require students’ to produce written material in English, candidates must: ensure that text is legible and that spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPG) are accurate so that meaning is clear; select and use a form and style of writing appropriate to studying a complex subject matter: organise information clearly and coherently, using specialist vocabulary when appropriate and Harvard referencing of citation and sources. In this Specification, SPG will be assessed in all tutor marked assignments (TMAs).

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Entry Requirement

Entry to this Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma requires that potential students have gained GCSE/IGCSE or equivalent qualifications and have, good English oral, reading and writing skills.

Advice on enrolment and guidance of prior learning (APL) can be obtained through out contact centre. The course is a rolling programme and can be started at any point in the year. Successful students can go on to Higher Education, including remaining as students at OLC to complete courses in our portfolio of higher awards.

All students must be aged 16 or over.

Assesment

The coursework is assessed through continuous assessment with no formal exit examinations.

Study Hours

Approximately: 200 hours of personal study time for the entire course is recommended. All of which is supported by the OLC Course Tutor, who we greatly encourage students to access support from throughout their course.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 1: Introduction to Human Resource Management (HRM)

The first unit introduces and identifies exactly what is meant when we use the term HRM. We will explore the distinctions between the practices of HRM and Personnel Management. In this module we will explore:

  • The concept is traced from its early development through to the present day.
  • The two “schools” of HRM are then discussed and the differences between them identified.
  • This module is concluded by a brief consideration of the European context.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 2: The modern HRM environment

Here we will analyse the factors surrounding the present HRM environment. We will do this by considering a number of factors including the following:

  • Globalisation.
  • Recent public sector developments.
  • The Labour market.
  • Vocation training and education.

By the conclusion of this module you will have acquired a sound knowledge of the underlying background of HRM and its place in the World today.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 3: The contract of employment

This unit considers the role and importance of the contract of employment. The contract of employment is something which is frequently overlooked in HRM courses. In this module learners will examine a number of important areas including:

  • The nature of the contract of employment.
  • The importance of establishing the status of the worker.
  • The various criteria used in order to determine this question.
  • The influence of European law upon this area.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 4: Contents of the contract of employment

This unit considers the contents of the contract and the relative importance of different terms. Having established the importance of contracts of employment, the student will explore the following points in this module:

  • Mutual duties of employer and employee.
  • Distinctions between different contractual terms.
  • The concept of vicarious liability.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 5: Termination of the contract of employment

In this unit you will be exploring various routes by which the contract of employment can come be terminated. In this module we explore dismissal and unfair dismissal. In addition the module explores the following:

  • The basic considerations affecting redundancy.
  • The concept of frustration.
  • The common law view of dismissal.

You will gain knowledge of reasoning behind dismissals as well as the process.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 6: Discrimination in Employment

This unit explores the issue of discrimination in Employment. Not only the traditional areas of discrimination such as racial and sexual discrimination, but also considers forms of discrimination that are more recent developments including:

  • Disability Discrimination.
  • Discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.

The entire area is placed within the context of European and domestic law.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 7: Trade Union and Industrial Conflict

As you progress through this unit you will explore the role and function of Trade Unions and Industrial Conflict and its implications for Human Resources. In particular we will examine the following:

  • What exactly do we mean by the term “trade union”?
  • How have these bodies developed throughout the course of history.
  • The legal status afforded to trade unions.
  • An outline of the area of industrial conflict.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 8: Motivational techniques

Here you will gain an understanding of motivational techniques that can be used for success in Human Resources. The focus of the module is on behavioural scientific techniques. In this module we will explore the following:

  • What do we mean when we use the term “motivation”?
  • A consideration of some of the barriers to motivation.
  • An analysis of the different “schools” of motivation i.e. content and process.
  • A detailed look at the work of leading theorists in this area.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 9: Key human resource processes

This unit explores key human resource areas that are among the main processes of HR. Many of these processes in turn are our daily “bread and butter” of the HRM specialist and they include:

  • Recruitment and selection.
  • Learning organisations.
  • Performance management.
  • Appraisal.

Accredited Level 3 Human Resources Diploma Unit 10: Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics

Your final unit sums up everything covered in this course and reviews two relatively new concepts to Human Resources. In this module we will consider the potential responses by the HRM specialist to concerns such as environmental awareness and the pressures of national and international governments that may be applied that will affect the HR specialist.
