Introduction

The course presents content related to generic management skills for those who are planning to, or already working in a health and social care management role. The course provides a flexible route for those who have already achieved management qualifications at a lower level and for learners who do not have management qualifications, but may have qualifications in other areas and/or prior experience the work place.

This level 5 management qualification relates to much of the knowledge and understanding for the National Occupational Standards in management and Leadership (level 5).

This qualification is designed for learners who are typically aged 18 and above and it is a 120 credit qualification.

Each unit will also provide you with referenced evidence and example further reading texts and web sites so that you can develop your knowledge and understanding further, independently of the course. There are no set text books for the course.

ATHE Level 5 Acc Management Health + Social Care Diploma Entry Requirements

You must have:
1. prior study in Healthcare Management or related subjects at level 4 or above to enrol into our Level 5 Acc Management Health + Social Care Diploma
2. A level 4 qualification for example an ATHE Level 4 Diploma in Management for Health and Social Care (QCF)
3. other equivalent international qualifications

It is assumed that you have access to a health and social care environment in order to fulfil the assessment criteria of the course units.

ATHE Level 5 Acc Management Health + Social Care Diploma Course Content

You must successfully complete all units and associated assessments to achieve the 120 points for the award. The optional units have already been chosen and incorporated into the study content below. The selection has been based on the most appropriate units for distance learners.

Unit 1: Facilitating Change in Health and Social Care

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.

Through study of this unit you will develop knowledge and understanding of key drivers of change in health and social care. You will also be provided with an opportunity to evaluate recent changes in health and social care service provision. During this unit you will also study the key elements of change management and how to manage and monitor change in health and social care management roles/contexts.

Unit 2: Managing Communication

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.

The aim of this unit is to help you develop knowledge and understanding of communication both with colleagues in health and social care organisations and with service users. You will gain an understanding of why communication is sometimes ineffective and the skills needed to overcome difficulties. You will demonstrate a range of communication skills and be able to carry out a comprehensive review/audit of communication strategies within a specific area of health and social care.

Unit 3: People Management

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.

This unit provides an opportunity for you to develop knowledge and understanding of what motivates individuals and teams and be able to use this to review people management strategies used in organisations.

You will gain an understanding of leadership theories, motivational theories, the impact of structure and culture as well as other tools that can be used to empower people in the workplace.

Unit 4: Research Project

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 20 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 80

This unit provides an opportunity to learn about research methodology, methods and analysis relevant to health and social care contexts.

At the end of this unit you will be required to formulate a research specification on a chosen topic, implement the research project, evaluate and present the research findings. Therefore you will need to have access to a relevant health and social care context.

Unit 5: Leading Practice in Health and Social Care

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60

Leading Practice in Health and Social Care follows naturally on from the core mandatory units and encompasses many principles of management and leadership that you can translate into current work roles or use to underpin career development. The unit provides you with an opportunity to explore roles in leadership contexts and opportunities to look at systems and policies and how they underpin management and leadership within health and social care contexts

Unit 6: Working with Multidisciplinary Teams

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.

This unit will help you develop the skills and knowledge required to build and lead multi-disciplinary teams and to build effective working relationships with other professionals. The unit is suitable for those working in healthcare, social care, children’s services and other public services that require multi-agency or multi-disciplinary working. Stakeholders may be other organisations or agencies or service users.

Unit 7: Empowering Users of Health and Social Care Services

This is a level 4 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.

Through study of this unit you will develop an understanding of how through the design and review of legislative and management systems, providers can empower service users in promoting their individual rights of participation and independence.

Unit 8: Management of Safeguarding for Health and Social Care

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 10 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 40.

This unit provides you with important opportunities to explore the roles and responsibilities in safeguarding and also evaluation of legal positions and how the person centred approach can be situated within the health and social care context.

Progression

This ATHE Level 5 Acc Management Health + Social Care Diploma can be used to gain entry to a Level 6 Diploma or Degree course in a related field.
