The travel and tourism is a diverse and exciting industry which is continually changing and developing. This award can lay the foundations for career development within the industry and equip you with the skills you need to both understand and manage the dynamic nature of the trade. As the equivalent to the first year of a degree, it can also be used as a springboard for further study at degree level.

At the end of this course successful learners will receive a Certificate of Achievement from ATHE and a Learner Unit Summary (which lists the details of all the units the learner has completed as part of the course).

The unit summary can be used as evidence towards Recognition of Prior Learning if you wish to progress your studies in this sector. To this end the learning outcomes of the course have been benchmarked at Level 4 against level descriptors published by Ofqual, to indicate the depth of study and level of demand/complexity involved in successful completion by the learner.

Students must hold a Level 3 Diploma or A Level qualification to enrol into the Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE).

Basic English reading and writing skills, as full tutor support is given.

All students must be 16 years of age or above.

Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) Unit 1:The Travel and Tourism Sector

In order for students to have an understanding of the industry as a whole, the first unit of this Management for Travel and Tourism course will give a broad outline and explanation of the development and impact of global tourism.

Although Thomas Cook is widely recognized as the founder of the tourism industry, tourism has been in existence ever since humans started to travel for reasons other than economic or political. It is well documented that both the Greeks and Romans travelled to spas as early as the second century. Elsewhere in the world, religious pilgrimages have taken place for time immemorial. In this unit, students will know the timeline of the major milestones in tourism history. Modern travel and tourism has not developed in an ad hoc manner as it did in its infancy. This unit will explore the main influences on the industries development globally and at the local level.

Political policy has been a major factor in tourism growth. By use of case studies and personal research, students will consider how governments and international agencies have influenced development. Various factors will be examined such as the development of infra structure; global events like the Olympics; economic policy as in Greece; political change and political instability as in Africa and the Middle East.

Inextricably linked with political decisions is supply and demand. Students will understand how economic factors influence the growth of tourism by examining the effects of the recent economic crash. In addition, the effects of political instability and areas of conflict will be investigated as well as social factors for example the effects of crime and health issues.

Finally, the impact of tourism on the environment and society will be briefly explored to lay a foundation for future study at level 5.

Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) Unit 2: Communication Skills

In all spheres of life communication is vitally important and none more so than in the business environment. The wrong message given to the wrong person could have catastrophic implications for the individual and the business as a whole. To be successful, it is imperative that appropriate and good communication skills are acquired and applied.

In this second unit all forms of oral and written communication methods will be examined and scrutinised including social media. Students will be exposed to appropriate methods and styles of communication and alerted to common mistakes that are made. Barriers to effective communication will also be considered.

Besides formal forms of communication, informal oral communication is prevalent in the travel and tourism trade. This unit will consider how productive relationships can be formed with colleagues, consumers and other stake holders by use of effective oral communication.

Finally, how to design and deliver appropriate presentations to an audience and how to conduct productive meetings will examined and practiced.

Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) Unit 3: People in Organisations

The primary resource of any business is the people who work within it. The travel and tourism industry is far more people orientated than many other major industries. It is essential that staff are not only well trained and efficient but that they are also happy and pleasant when conducting their day to day work with the public. One grumpy or rude staff member can jeopardise the reputation of a business. Long unsociable hours, often dealing with demanding customers, can take its toll on even the most professional person. Managing people and assuring their wellbeing is therefore of optimal importance in this sector.

Following on from Unit 2, one of the focuses of this unit will be on communication within an organization. Policies and procedures to aid effective communication will be inquired into and the impact of organizational structures on communication will be evaluated.

Issues relating to the way people work will be inspected and appraised such as team work and remote working. Effective leadership of the varied working modes will be considered and the role Human Resource departments have to play explored.

As many roles within the industry are very demanding, how management and Human Resources can optimally support staff will be considered and evaluated. The importance of good policies and procedures to support staff will be discussed as well as statutory provisions relating to equality and health and safety at work.

Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) Unit 4: Applying Promotional Techniques

In this unit, the role and range of promotional methods will be explained. In modern business, it is essential that the correct target market is identified and that promotional campaigns are designed to attract that market. With the advances in modern technology, they are now a multitude of marketing methods and devices that can be used; these will be systematically examined and their effectiveness in given situations evaluated. The development of branding will also be looked into.

Advertising is now regulated by EU legislation and a voluntary UK code of practice which are overseen by the Advertising Standards Authority. Marketing campaigns must not mislead, harm or offend consumers and cannot be unfair. How the rules effect promotional material will be examined and scrutinized by use of case studies of current advertising campaigns.

Students will be expected to be able to evaluate existing campaigns and, through that understanding, design their own promotional campaign for a specific business.

Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) Unit 5: Personal and Professional Development

The travel and tourism industry is dynamic and fluid. As seen in the previous units, technology, changing trends, supply and demand are constantly changing the nature of the industry. To keep abreast of all of the changes it is imperative that managers are able to continually adapt their skills and knowledge. In this unit we will be examining how students can successfully engage in lifelong learning and encourage others to do the same.

Initially approaches to self-managed learning will be explored. Students will be required to audit their own skills and, by reflecting on the previous units, evaluate their own current skills and identify their own development needs. A development plan will be produced and key objectives will be acted upon. At key stages the student will be required to critically reflect on the progress made, identifying problems and formulating solutions. The plan will form the foundation of a lifelong working document that can enable the individual to continue adapting to their working environment.

The skills learnt and the knowledge acquired will also inform managers on strategies to support their own staff now and in the future.

Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) Unit 6: Tourist Destinations

What makes a tourist destination? Tourist destinations vary enormously in nature and form. A place can become popular due to its geography, climate, history, facilities, culture, accessibility or a mixture of any of the afore mentioned. Much will depend on supply and demand, changing trends and public awareness. This unit will explore and analyse what makes a tourist destination, what makes it popular and how it can be sustained both in terms of popularity and the environment.

By the analysis of statistics, the most popular tourist destinations will be identified and their appeal to the public will be determined. The features of diverse destinations will be compared and discussed to establish the common denominators that produce a product that is both resilient and sustainable. Case studies of emerging destinations will be explored and analysed and the potential success of each will be discussed. By comparison of similar already established destinations, students will identify both positive and negative characteristics and suggest ways in which the emerging destinations can secure popularity.

Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) Unit 7: The Management of Visitor Attractions

Types of visitor attractions are diverse: geographical; historical; special interest; cultural; active; inter-active; permanent or transient. In this unit the different types of visitor attractions will be identified. The complexities of both managing and sustaining a successful visitor attraction will be discussed. Issues such as supply and demand and the fluctuating needs and interests of potential visitors will be probed.

The role of marketing and motivational theories will be explored and an investigation into how these can be used to sustain interest considered.

The economic, social and environmental impact of visitor attractions will be analysed.

Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) Unit 8: Business Law

As seen in previous units, every business, no matter how large or small, is subject to a range of legal provisions both in the UK and globally. Every day businesses use the law, either consciously or unconsciously, in their activities with staff, consumers, government agencies and other stakeholders. An in depth knowledge of the law is not required but awareness of the important provisions is essential to operate a successful business. In this unit key legislation will be explained and opportunity for application and evaluation will be provided.

An overview of contract law will be provided and remedies will be discussed. Associated legislation will be explained such as the legal provisions for product liability and unfair contract terms. As the use of credit is now prolific, an over view of credit agreements and the role of parties to these agreements will be provided and discussed, allowing for evaluation of how these rules can possibly impact on business transactions.

The travel and tourism industry bases much of their marketing on the production of brochures, leaflets and web pages. The current law relating to intellectual property and copyright protection will be outlined and discussed.

Finally the legal rules relating to monopolies, mergers and anti-competitive practices will be outlined and explained.


This Level 4 Accredited Management Travel + Tourism Diploma (ATHE) can be used to gain entry to a Level 5 Diploma or Degree course in a related field.
