Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma

Introduction

This qualification is designed for learners who are typically aged 18 and above and it is a 120 credit qualification.
The course presents content related to generic management skills for those who are planning to, or already working in a health and social care management role. The course provides a flexible route for those who have already achieved management qualifications at a lower level and for learners who do not have management qualifications, but may have qualifications in other areas and/or prior experience the work place.

This level 4 management qualification relates to much of the knowledge and understanding for the National Occupational Standards in management and Leadership (level 4)
Progression

On successful completion of this level 4 qualification you may wish to progress to a level 5 qualification within the same or allied field.

Pre requisites for entry
You must have at least one of the following levels of education prior to registering for this award:

  • GCE Advanced level with achievement in 2 or more subjects supported by 5 or more GCSEs at grades C and above
  • Other related level 3 subjects
  • An Access to Higher Education Certificate delivered by an approved further education institute and validated by an Access Validating Agency
  • Other equivalent international qualifications

You must also have an appropriate standard of English to enable you to access relevant resources and complete the unit assignments. You may also have relevant work experience. Mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include relevant work experience (paid and/or unpaid) with levels of responsibility, participation and/or achievement of relevant professional qualifications. This may be used for recognition of prior learning (RPL). If you are unsure about any or the prerequisites please speak with a college advisor before registering.

Course structure

Each unit will be presented with full overviews of the learning outcomes, assessment criteria and what is required academically. Units will cover all indicative content related to the specification, and provide opportunities for you to engage in independent study and research through guided activities and a range of scenarios.
Each unit has a summative assessment which you will need to pass before moving on to the next unit
To achieve a pass for a unit, you must have successfully achieved the learning outcomes at the standards set by the assessment criteria for that unit. There are no externally set written examinations attached to any unit but you will be required to complete a research project which might include assessment through:

  • A research activity resulting in the compilation of a report
  • An academic paper or article for publication
  • The compilation of a case study
  • A critical review and evaluation of a chosen company’s policies, procedures and systems
  • A set project completed for an employer (also known as an ‘employer-engagement’ activity)
  • The production of a portfolio of evidence relating to a particular unit

It is assumed that you have access to a health and social care environment in order to fulfil the assessment criteria of the course units.
Each unit will also provide you with referenced evidence and example further reading texts and web sites so that you can develop your knowledge and understanding further, independently of the course. There are no set text books for the course.

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Entry Requirements

Students must hold a Level 3 Diploma or A Level qualification to enter into the Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Diploma.

Basic English reading and writing skills, as full tutor support is given.

All students must be 16 years of age or above.

You must successfully complete all units and associated assessments to achieve the 120 points for the award. The optional units have already been chosen and incorporated into the study content below. The selection has been based on the most appropriate units for distance learners.

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma Unit 1: Health and Social Care in Context

This is a level 4 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.
Through study of this unit you will develop understanding of a health and/or social care area in which you would like to work. You will also develop understanding in order to critically evaluate the impact of legislative frameworks in the context of local practice

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma Unit 2: Communication Skills for Health and Social Care

This is a level 4 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.
The aim of this unit is to help you develop knowledge and understanding of communication both with colleagues in health and social care organisations and with service users. You will gain an understanding of why communication is sometimes ineffective and the skills needed to overcome difficulties. You will demonstrate a range of communication skills including carrying out an oral presentation to colleagues, a face to face consultation with a service user and formal written communication.

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma Unit 3: People in organisations

This is a level 4 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.
This unit aims to develop knowledge of those aspects of organisations that concern and support people. This includes communication practices, teamwork, remote working and other organisational structures. Using this knowledge you will be able to review the impact of workplace practices on people.

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma Unit 4: Working with Multidisciplinary Teams

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.
This unit will help you develop the skills and knowledge required to build and lead multi-disciplinary teams and to build effective working relationships with other professionals. The unit is suitable for those working in healthcare, social care, children’s services and other public services that require multi-agency or multi-disciplinary working. Stakeholders may be other organisations or agencies or service users.

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma Unit 5: Empowering Users of Health and Social Care Services

This is a level 4 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.
Through study of this unit you will develop an understanding of how through the design and review of legislative and management systems, providers can empower service users in promoting their individual rights of participation and independence.

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma Unit 6: Contemporary Issues in Health and Social Care

This is a level 5 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.
This unit will help you develop the skills to research how contemporary issues of public concern relating to health and social care are identified and presented in the public domain. You will also develop an understanding of the role the media plays in presenting information to the public and how the media can be used to influence the attitudes and behaviours of people.

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma Unit 7: Health and Safety in the Health and Social Care Workplace

This is a level 4 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.
Through study of this unit you will develop an understanding of the risks and responsibilities of health and safety in the health and social care workplace.

Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Care Diploma Unit 8: Management of Health and Social Care Provision

This is a level 4 unit with a credit value of 15 and a suggested guided learning hour content of 60.
This unit will explore how to be an effective manager in health and social care requires a need to supervise and manage provision and lead and support others. This unit will also help you develop knowledge, skills and understanding of the role of a manager in managing provision and practice in health and social care in ways that continually improve what is delivered. This unit is suitable for those working or intending to work in healthcare, social care, children’s services and related areas.

Progression

This Level 4 ATHE Accredited Management in Health and Social Diploma can be used to gain entry to a Level 5 Diploma or Degree course in a related field.
