From your Student Services Team IA04: Can I Apply to University with These Qualifications?
Deciding on your next steps in education can be daunting, especially when determining if your qualifications meet university entry requirements. At Oxford College, we understand that students come from diverse educational backgrounds, and we aim to support you in making informed decisions about higher education.

Understanding University Entry Requirements
Each university sets its own entry requirements, which can vary depending on the course and institution. Generally, universities consider the following when assessing an applicant:
- A-levels or equivalent Accredited Level 3 qualifications
- GCSEs, particularly in English and Mathematics
- BTEC, NVQ, or other vocational qualifications
- International qualifications
- Access to Higher Education Diplomas
- Relevant work experience (for some courses)
A-Levels and UCAS Points
A-levels are one of the most common qualifications accepted by universities in the UK. Each grade is assigned a specific number of UCAS Tariff points, which contribute to meeting university entry requirements:
| A-Level Grade | UCAS Points |
| A* | 56 |
| A | 48 |
| B | 40 |
| C | 32 |
| D | 24 |
| E | 16 |
Most undergraduate degree courses require between 96 to 128 UCAS points, meaning students typically need at least three A-levels with good grades to meet entry criteria. Some competitive courses, such as Medicine or Law, may require even higher UCAS points.
Students who do not meet the required UCAS points can consider alternative qualifications or additional study to increase their total.
Accredited Level 3 Qualifications and UCAS Points
Our Accredited Level 3 Diplomas provide a foundation for university applications and are equivalent to 30 UCAS Tariff points. However, as most universities require 96 to 128 UCAS points, having only one Level 3 Diploma may not be sufficient. Students often need multiple qualifications or higher-level study to meet entry requirements.
It’s important to note that our Standard Level 3 Diplomas do not carry UCAS points. While they provide valuable knowledge and skills, they may not contribute directly to university entry requirements.

Advancing with Level 4 & 5 Diplomas
For students aiming to deepen their expertise and enhance their university applications, we offer Level 4 and Level 5 Diplomas. These qualifications are equivalent to the first and second years of a bachelor’s degree, respectively. Upon successful completion, students can apply for a top-up year at a university to convert their diploma into a full bachelor’s degree. This pathway provides a flexible and comprehensive route to achieving higher education qualifications.
Steps to Determine Your Eligibility
To assess whether your qualifications meet specific university requirements:
- Check University Websites – Most institutions list their entry requirements for each course online.
- Contact Admissions Offices – If uncertain, reach out directly to the university for confirmation.
- Use UCAS Guidance – The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) offers tools and information to help understand qualification standings.
Alternative Pathways
If your current qualifications do not meet the necessary criteria, consider the following options:
- Access to Higher Education Diploma – A course designed to prepare students for university-level study.
- Foundation Year Programmes – Offered by some universities to bridge the gap between current qualifications and undergraduate entry requirements.
- Gaining Relevant Work Experience – Some courses value practical experience alongside academic qualifications.
- Discussing Alternative Entry Routes – Speak with university admissions to explore possible flexible entry options.
