From Your Student Services Team IA07: How Many A Levels Do Universities Require?
When you’re planning your academic journey, one of the biggest questions students ask is: “How many A Levels do I need to apply to university?”
The answer depends on the course, university, and even your individual circumstances — but here’s a breakdown to help you make confident decisions.

How Many A Levels Are Typically Required?
Most UK universities require applicants to have a minimum of 3 A Levels for standard undergraduate entry. This applies to both UCAS applications and direct entry routes.
- 3 A Levels is the standard across nearly all universities.
- Some very competitive courses (like Medicine or Law) may expect high grades or specific subjects within those 3 A Levels.
- A few courses may accept 2 A Levels if supported by other qualifications, such as a BTEC, Access to HE Diploma, or relevant work experience.
Do I Need More Than 3 A Levels?
In most cases, no. Taking more than 3 A Levels does not usually increase your chances of being accepted, especially if it affects your performance.
Universities tend to focus on:
- Quality over quantity – strong grades in 3 A Levels are more valuable than mediocre results in 4 or 5.
- Subject relevance – they want to see the right subjects for your chosen degree (e.g. Chemistry and Biology for Medicine).

What About UCAS Tariff Points?
Some universities use UCAS Tariff Points, which assign numerical values to A Level grades.
Example:
- A* = 56 points
- A = 48 points
- B = 40 points
…and so on.
In this system, your total points matter, not just the number of A Levels — meaning other qualifications like AS Levels, EPQ, or Accredited Level 3 Diplomas may help meet the requirement.
