From your Student Services Team IA01: Registering as a Private Candidate

Oxford College offers a fully online A Level study experience, empowering students to learn at their own pace from the comfort of their homes. As a fully digital institution, we do not serve as an exam centre; however, we support our students in registering for their exams at approved private exam centres.
If you are studying A Levels with Oxford College, here is a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the process of booking your exams as a private candidate.
1. Understand Your Exam Requirements
Each A Level subject has specific exam and assessment components, which may include written papers, coursework, or practical assessments. Before registering, ensure you:
- Know the awarding body (e.g., Pearson Edexcel, AQA, OCR) for your course.
- Understand the format and timetable of your exams.
- Confirm if your subject includes any additional requirements, such as practical endorsements for science subjects.
2. Search for an Approved Exam Centre
Private candidates must sit their exams at approved centres that accommodate external students. To find a suitable centre:
- Visit the website of your awarding body, which often provides a list of approved centres.
- Contact local schools, colleges, or dedicated private exam centres in your area to check if they accept private candidates.
It’s important to start this process early, as spaces at exam centres can fill up quickly, especially in popular locations.
3. Contact the Exam Centre
Once you’ve identified a potential centre, reach out to confirm their availability and requirements. When contacting them, you should:
- Provide details of your A Level subjects and the awarding body.
- Enquire about registration deadlines, fees, and required documentation.
- Confirm if they offer practical assessments, if needed.
4. Register and Submit Required Documentation
To complete your registration, you will typically need to:
- Fill out the centre’s registration form.
- Provide proof of identity (e.g., passport or driver’s license).
- Submit details about your A Level course and awarding body.
- Pay any applicable exam fees.
Ensure you keep copies of all communications and receipts for your records.
5. Prepare for Exam Day
Once registered, the exam centre will provide you with important details, including:
- Exam dates, times, and location.
- Any specific rules or materials allowed in the exam room.
- Practical assessment schedules, if applicable.
Make sure to review these details carefully and plan your travel arrangements in advance.
