Charity Project February – Street Child
Our Charity Project for February is Street Child of Sierra Leone.
There is a huge street child phenomenon in Sierra Leone. Research shows that there are almost 50,000 children in Sierra Leone who depend on the streets for their survival. A 10-year-long civil war and acute poverty has driven thousands of children to the streets in search of food, work and a better life. Instead they face a lonely existence of hardship and exploitation.
Street Child is a UK based charity, which since its establishment in 2008, has worked to provide education to children in West Africa. They began in Sierra Leone, where they have to date supported over 20,000 children.
Working with its partners, the charity started with one project, but has since expanded to over 30 projects in different countries. While their primary focus is to help children into education, they have also managed to reunite around 2,000 families to date.
